for once in a very, very long time, the apartment is immaculate, free from the clutter one would expect from two workaholics and one on the verge of becoming one. he'd done most of the cleaning, finding time between work sessions, but he left their bedrooms untouched, not wanting to know their secrets.[break][break]

the apartment has been cleared out, vacated to allow them their privacy just for this one evening. his roommates are likely holed up in the office, and even now, a part of him aches to be there with them.[break][break]

but as @sidney steps through the door, invited in, that part of him quickly fades.[break][break]

"i thought i'd cook you dinner. show you what you're missing out on."[break][break]

he says, smiling as he steps into the kitchen where he'd already started cooking.[break][break]

"you're not allergic to anything, right?"

This feels a bit out of the ordinary for her. Then again, Sidney has come to acknowledge her experience with JAMES BAKER up to this point had already been a deviation from the norm at every turn. She’s not one to stick around, or really make time in between tracking her marks, or making cargo drops.[break][break]
And yet when he asks her over, she goes. Inexplicably.[break][break]
The place is certainly cleaner than she expects of a twenty-something guy with roommates–not that she’d judge. She’s honestly of the messier variety herself. Clothes draped on chairs, papers and file folders scattered.[break][break]
“Oh? Dunno the last time anyone’s cooked for me,” she says as she’s ushered in. Honestly, she doesn’t really know the last time a date was just a quiet night in.[break][break]
He’s not the only one who’s been busy with work, and for someone as adventurous and go go go as herself, it’s weirdly nice to slow the pace. Even if just for an evening.[break][break]
Sidney follows him into the kitchen, the scent of cooking food greeting her. “Smells nice, whatever it is.” She tries to peek around him, curious, to look at the stove. “Nope. Not picky either.” She winks, just to prove that she means that in more ways than one.[break][break]
And maybe to fluster him. Just a bit.

her wink goes unnoticed as he's too distracted with cooking. he's familiar and trained enough to do so without much effort, but it's been a while since he'd last cooked, and he'd hate to mess anything up tonight.[break][break]

"that's good to hear! and it's, uh," he stirs, surprised to see her next to him, "gyudon. basically beef in a bowl."[break][break]

then, reaching over to pull the fridge open, he gestures in.[break][break]

"do you want anything to drink? i bought some stuff."

Really and truly, he doesn’t need to worry too much, because whatever he cooks is probably much better than whatever she can do.[break][break]
She laughs, head tilting, “I know what gyudon is! But I’ll wait to be impressed.” Again, probably way better than her own cooking, and authentic homemade food usually trumps everything in general. “Can’t remember the last time I actually had home cooking,” Sidney adds, peering up at him.[break][break]
And instant noodles or mac n’ cheese made in her microwave don’t count.[break][break]
“Sure, whatcha got?” She pokes her head in the fridge, curious as a gust of cool air hits her in the face.

because the thought of not having home-cooked food sounds depressing to james. even if things don't work out between them romantically (or whatever he may have been hoping for at the time), he still wouldn't mind cooking for her sometimes. whenever his busy schedule permits.[break][break]

“So can I,” she pauses, laughing, “‘Else it probably would’ve been burnt frozen lasagna for me.” No one should ever let her in a kitchen– truly.[break][break]
She’ll take a home-cooked meal any day.[break][break]
No matter who from. And it’s easy to accept the offering from James, who is kind and earnest as can be. He kinda deserves better than to have to deal with the likes of her, whether as friends or more or not.[break][break]
“Wine, huh?” A snort slips out. “You’re in luck–can’t say I’ve ever been sophisticated so…”[break][break]
She grabs a beer and lets the door swing shut before she pops the metal tab. “...No need to worry about that.”

a smile grows as he watches her grab a beer before letting the door swing shut. though his eyebrow may raise, it's only out of jest.[break][break]

"you know, i can see that." he chuckles. "not that it's a bad thing, of course. makes you more genuine."[break][break]

easily, he returns to preparing their food, able to multitask efficiently as he starts chopping up ingredients.[break][break]

"is beer what you prefer drinking, then? i'll be sure to get some more for next time."

Her head cants to the side at his remark, one brow lifting. “Well aren’t you sweet,” she teases. Genuine is another word she’s fairly sure no one has ever applied to her, but she’ll take it.[break][break]
“You’re right, though. I’m just a simple gal.” Simple, until she’s very most definitely not. But she’ll keep that to herself.[break][break]
Leaning with her back against the counter, she settles in to watch him cook. Idly, she sips from the bottle. “That comes really naturally to you.”[break][break]
Eventually, though, a slow smile spreads across her lips. “Oh, next time, huh?” she shrugs, “Yeah, for the most part. It’s cheap.”
